Natasha & Akpabio
Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has recused himself from hearing the lawsuit filed by suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The judge cited a petition from Senate President Godswill Akpabio challenging his impartiality.
The case, originally scheduled for hearing, was reassigned following Justice Egwuatu’s decision. Earlier, on March 4, he had issued an interim order halting the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from proceeding with disciplinary actions against Akpoti-Uduaghan for allegedly violating legislative rules.
Despite the court order, the Senate Committee proceeded with its hearing and suspended the senator for six months. The judge later amended his interim order, removing the restriction on the Senate’s activities while the case was pending.
Akpabio’s legal team, led by Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN), questioned the court’s authority to intervene in Senate matters. The case will now be reassigned to a different judge.
