A routine vehicle inspection turned into high drama on Wednesday when a motorist attempting to evade arrest by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) lay under his car to prevent it from being towed.
The bizarre incident occurred at Akin Adesola Street, inward Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos, during peak traffic hours, leading to a severe backlog that extended all the way to the Civic Centre axis.
According to a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the driver’s resistance disrupted traffic flow and created a scene that drew the attention of commuters and passersby.
“A motorist resisting arrest from VIO officers has kept under his vehicle thereby creating a scene and avoiding being towed at Akin Adesola inward Ozumba Mbadiwe causing traffic backlog to Civic Centre,” the agency posted.
The situation quickly escalated, prompting the presence of both VIO and police officers at the scene, while LASTMA personnel worked to manage the resulting traffic chaos.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with drivers stuck in gridlock and onlookers gathering to watch the standoff unfold.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the motorist was eventually removed or taken into custody, but the incident has once again raised concerns about enforcement tactics and motorists’ responses during traffic stops in Lagos.
Lagos Reporters will continue to monitor developments and provide updates on traffic enforcement and public safety across the city.
