The Lagos State Government has barred pregnant women from participating in the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage, citing health and safety risks.
Commissioner for Home Affairs, Olanrewaju Ibrahim Layode, announced the decision in Badagry, aligning with a directive from the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). He emphasized that the physical demands of the pilgrimage make it unsafe for expectant mothers.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also urged only medically fit individuals to undertake the journey. To enforce compliance, the state has introduced advanced medical screening, including mobile diagnostic vans to detect pregnancies and other conditions.
