No fewer than 30 cows were confirmed poisoned by suspected hoodlums close to the INEC area office in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Secretary of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, MACBAN, in Mangu, Musa Muhammad, told journalists that the incident occurred around 1:30 pm when over 950 cattle were grazing in the area.
According to the MACBAN secretary, all security heads in the local government area, including the Commander of Sector 3, the DPO, and the OC SSS office in Mangu, were informed about the incident.
MACBAN accused Muwagvle youths of poisoning the cattle, an accusation the group denied.
Mr Muhammad said: “Both Muwagvle and Fulani leaders were called by the LG chairman to introduce us to the Commander of Sector 8, when suddenly some herders called and informed us that their cattle were poisoned.
“We moved to the scene of the incident together with the new commander of the sector.
“Out of the 950 cattle, 26 have been killed. We’re unsure of the condition of the remaining ones. About 50 are standing in one place, seemingly unstable.
“Poison was placed on mangoes and scattered around the grazing area. The put poison in a water source which the cattle drink the water,” he added.
The secretary, however, said the heads of security agencies who visited the area called on them to remain patient, assuring that measures would be taken to investigate the situation.
Spokesperson of Mawaugvle Youth Movement, Satmak Bala, when contacted, denied the allegations and called on the public to dismiss it.
He said: “Actually, when I heard about the incident this morning, some people and I rushed to the scene. Arriving there, we saw some cattle already dead, but no one could tell you what happened to them.
“Even the Fulani don’t know what happened to them. It’s not our people. Their allegation is baseless and should be dismissed,” he said.
