The Accident Scene
At least seven people have been confirmed dead after a truck loaded with Dangote Cement lost control and crashed along the Okunchi axis of Okene Local Government Area in Kogi State, SaharaReporters has learnt.
A disturbing video obtained by SaharaReporters shows the mangled remains of the truck, marked with Dangote Group’s branding, lying across the road with bodies strewn nearby on Monday evening during the Easter celebration.
Locals can be seen frantically calling for help, while others struggle to pull victims from under the heavy vehicle.
“There was an accident and we have found seven bodies dead already,” a distressed eyewitness told SaharaReporters at the scene.
“Some people are still trapped under the truck. Those trapped were later rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment.”
The witness, who filmed the harrowing aftermath, added: “We are making this video for good people who can come fast for rescue. The situation is terrible.”
While the cause of the accident remains unclear, residents say the truck appeared to have lost control due to overspeeding, a frequent complaint about many Dangote truck drivers who ply the area.
They also pointed fingers at poor road conditions and the lack of enforcement of safety regulations on Nigeria’s highways.
“This is not the first time we are witnessing such a calamity involving Dangote trucks. These drivers drive like they are above the law. How many lives must be lost before someone holds them accountable?” the eyewitness added.
“We can’t just keep dying like flies,” the eyewitness lamented. “People were crushed like animals. We are calling on the government and relevant agencies to wake up and regulate this madness.”
