A fire outbreak in the early hours of Wednesday, May 7, 2025, destroyed property worth millions of naira at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The blaze affected three out of four rooms in the staff quarters of the institution but fortunately claimed no lives.
Findings revealed that the incident occurred around 2 a.m. and was reportedly triggered by an electrical spark following the restoration of power supply by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, told said that the distress call was received at exactly 2:26 a.m.
“The distressed call was received at exactly 02:26hrs on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. Firefighters led by ACFS Adesina Olusoji promptly turned out to the scene of the fire incident. On getting there, it was the staff quarters of the institution that were engulfed by fire,” he said.
Akinyinka noted that emergency responders quickly swung into action to contain the fire.
“The firemen swiftly swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to all nearby buildings and properties within the vicinity. The fire was completely extinguished in conjunction with the University of Ibadan Fire Department,” he added.
While no casualties were recorded, the incident left significant damage, affecting most of the staff quarters involved.
