The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has said that its operatives uncovered a syndicate involved in a major illicit operation of production and sale of adulterated and expired alcoholic beverages in Lagos.
The agency made this known in a statement issued on Thursday where it stated that its officials als arrested a suspect during the raid.
According to NAFDAC, its officials in a significant breakthrough, arrested one Mr. Madu Abuchi Simon, who was caught in the act of falsifying popular alcoholic brands including Hennessy, William Lawson, Baileys, Martell, St. Remy, and Jameson.
The agency said that while acting on intelligence, its officials raided the premises where the illegal activity was taking place.
A thorough search revealed alarming evidence: expired Amarula cream liquor, empty branded bottles and cartons, branded stickers, stoves, buckets, cotton wool, and a suspicious purple-coloured chemical believed to be used for cleaning and reusing bottles, NAFDAC said.
These items pointed to a well-organized counterfeit operation aimed at deceiving unsuspecting consumers.
According to NAFDAC, the suspect attempted to escape during the operation but was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement personnel on site.
In total, over 100 cartons of assorted adulterated alcoholic beverages, valued at more than N114 million, were confiscated and evacuated from the premises.
The outlet has since been sealed off pending further investigation.
NAFDAC issued a strong advisory to the public, urging consumers to purchase alcoholic products only from reputable vendors and to remain vigilant.
The agency also called on the public to report any suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
