The UK government is ending the recruitment of foreign care workers as part of new immigration reforms to cut net migration. Only degree-level qualified workers (RQF level 6+) will now qualify for Skilled Worker visas, with the salary threshold raised to £41,700.
A new temporary shortage occupation list will cover critical non-graduate roles but bans dependents and visa fee discounts. The changes, taking effect July 22, aim to cut migration by 100,000 annually.
The care sector, facing over 130,000 vacancies, has warned of severe staffing shortages. Transitional arrangements will apply to care workers already in the UK.
