The Federal Government has officially introduced the Chinese language, Mandarin, into the national curriculum for senior secondary schools across Nigeria.
The FCT Education Secretary, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, announced the development on Tuesday during the launch of Abuja’s 14th Chinese Corner.
He explained that the inclusion reflects Mandarin’s growing global relevance in commerce, education, culture, and international relations.
According to him, equipping Nigerian students with the language will provide them with opportunities to compete more effectively on the world stage.
“The review of our curriculum to accommodate Mandarin is part of a broader effort to prepare Nigerian youths for global competitiveness,” Mr Hayyo said.
“Equipping our students with Chinese language skills is about preparing them for global competitiveness,” Mr Hayyo explained.
“This initiative will expose them to opportunities in education, trade, and culture, and open doors for collaboration at international levels.”
DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the policy is seen as a move to deepen Nigeria–China ties in education, trade, and cultural exchange.
Mandarin, spoken by over one billion people worldwide, is increasingly seen as a language of commerce, technology, and diplomacy.
With China’s expanding global influence—and Nigeria’s growing economic and political partnership with Beijing—the government says introducing the language at secondary level is both strategic and timely.
