The 28-year-old Nigeria’s athletic star, Tobi Amusan on Monday claimed the silver medal in the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Amusan finished behind 23-year-old Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who delivered a record-breaking performance to win the gold medal.
Kambundji stormed to victory in 12.24 seconds, setting a new Swiss national record and securing her country’s first-ever world title in the event.
Amusan, the 2022 world champion and current world record holder, crossed the line in 12.29 seconds to take second place, giving Nigeria its 12th medal in World Championships history.
American Grace Stark clinched the bronze medal with 12.34 seconds, while her teammate Masai Russell came fourth in 12.44 seconds after recording the slowest reaction time of the field.
Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska equalled her season’s best of 12.49 seconds to finish fifth, narrowly ahead of Bahamian Devynne Charlton, who clocked the same time.
Defending champion Danielle Williams of Jamaica placed seventh in 12.53 seconds, while Nadine Visser of the Netherlands rounded out the field in eighth with 12.56 seconds.
Amusan had earlier looked in strong form in the semi-final, winning her heat in 12.36 seconds ahead of Visser and Skrzyszowska, raising hopes of a successful title defence.
However, in the final, despite a quick start, she could not hold off Kambundji’s late surge.
The latest silver medal win added to Amusan’s impressive résumé on the global stage of athletics.
She made history in 2022 in Eugene, Oregon, by becoming Nigeria’s first-ever world champion in athletics, setting a world record of 12.12 seconds in the semi-final before winning gold in the final.
The following year, at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, she narrowly missed the podium, finishing sixth after facing eligibility issues that disrupted her preparation.
She bounced back at the 2024 African Championships, where she successfully defended her continental crown, underlining her dominance in the hurdles on the continent.
With her Tokyo silver, Amusan continues to solidify her status as one of Nigeria’s greatest track athletes, adding yet another chapter to a career marked by resilience and record-breaking performances.
