The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old woman, identified simply as Misturah, for allegedly faking her own kidnapping and extorting the sum of N2.5 million from her husband in a staged abduction plot.
The incident was first reported to the police on November 24, 2025, when a lawyer, Hamzat (surname withheld), alerted security operatives that his brother’s wife had been kidnapped by unknown armed men.
A police source, who spoke in confidence, disclosed that the supposed kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of N10 million for Misturah’s release. The amount was later reduced to N3 million after negotiations, with N2.5 million eventually paid.
“Following the report of her supposed kidnapping, the command registered the incident for investigation. During ransom negotiations, the kidnappers reduced their demand to N3 million. Subsequently, a sum of N2.5 million was paid; however, the kidnappers initially refused to release the hostage,” the source revealed.
The source added that a team of operatives was immediately deployed to track the suspected kidnappers and rescue the victim. However, before the police could locate any hideout, the complainant later informed the command that Misturah had been released and reunited with her family.
Misturah was subsequently invited to the police command headquarters the next day, where she was debriefed and her statement recorded. In her account, she claimed she was abducted by six armed men who arrived in a silver Toyota Venza and took her to an undisclosed location.
She further alleged that her iPhone 12 Pro Max was seized by the kidnappers and that she was only released after the payment of N2.5 million. According to her, the ransom was first paid into her bank account before being handed over to the abductors.
However, police investigations raised suspicions, leading to the arrest of a 30-year-old man identified as Daniel on December 3, 2025, in Ede, Osun State. A SIM card used to register the WhatsApp account through which ransom negotiations were conducted was reportedly recovered from him.
During interrogation, Daniel stated that Misturah was an online acquaintance of about two years and had requested the use of his SIM card to register a WhatsApp account. He said he forwarded a one-time password sent to his phone, enabling her to activate the account.
He further claimed that Misturah informed him that the line would be used to resolve personal issues and later deactivated the account after use. According to him, she later admitted that the account was used to settle issues between herself and her husband, Ridwan, who is based in South Africa.
When confronted with Daniel’s confession during a police invitation, Misturah reportedly admitted to faking her own kidnapping in order to extort money from her husband.
Further findings also led to the recovery of her iPhone 12 Pro Max, which she had earlier claimed was with the kidnappers. The device was recovered from a 34-year-old man, Yusuf Sodiq, to whom she allegedly sold it for N380,000, with instructions not to insert any SIM card into the phone until a later time.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, said investigations were still ongoing.
She added that appropriate charges would be filed against the suspects at the conclusion of the investigation.
