A fire outbreak has destroyed several shops and goods worth millions of naira at Singa market in Kano state.
The inferno, which occurred on Saturday, reportedly engulfed Gidan Gilas, popularly known as “Gidan Mai”, a section of the market dominated by provision stores.
Witnesses said the fire spread rapidly to adjoining structures in the busy market, triggering panic as shop owners and residents attempted to salvage goods and prevent the flames from extending to nearby buildings.
Officials of the Kano State Fire Service arrived at the scene with a fire truck and began efforts to contain the blaze.
However, water from the truck was reportedly exhausted during the operation, prompting the arrival of a second fire truck to continue firefighting efforts.
A water tanker belonging to a private company also assisted firefighters at the scene.
Some traders and residents said additional water tankers were required to fully extinguish the fire and prevent further destruction.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, and there were no reports of injuries as of the time of filing this report.
The incident comes weeks after a similar fire outbreak at Singa Market caused significant losses for traders, compounding the hardship faced by business owners in the area.
