A ballistic missile struck a residential building in Tel Aviv, injuring at least 21 people, according to emergency services. Israeli defence officials said the majority of the incoming projectiles were intercepted by the country’s air defence systems, preventing wider casualties and infrastructure damage.
The escalation follows reports of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, during a large-scale joint U.S.–Israeli military operation. Iranian state television has announced 40 days of national mourning. However, unverified reports circulating online suggest mixed reactions within parts of Tehran.
A U.S. official confirmed that the joint operation, codenamed “Epic Fury,” was launched after intelligence assessments indicated Iran was rebuilding sensitive nuclear enrichment facilities. Washington has yet to release further operational details.
The conflict has triggered severe global economic repercussions. The closure of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz has disrupted nearly one-fifth of the world’s daily oil shipments, sending energy markets into turmoil. Regional aviation has also been heavily affected, with reported missile impacts near major transport hubs including Dubai International Airport and Kuwait International Airport, leading to widespread flight suspensions.
In response to the escalating crisis, the United States has surged more than 40 Air Force aircraft into the region to reinforce coalition defences and maintain air superiority over the Persian Gulf. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have signalled coordination with Washington amid growing fears of a wider regional war.
Meanwhile, Russia and China have called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, urging an immediate ceasefire as tensions threaten to spiral further.
With missile exchanges intensifying and diplomatic efforts struggling to gain traction, the Middle East now stands at one of its most volatile crossroads in recent history.
