Ghana has announced plans to introduce a visa-free regime for all African nationals beginning May 25, aligning the policy rollout with the annual celebration of Africa Day.

The date commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963—now known as the African Union—and underscores Ghana’s renewed commitment to Pan-African ideals.
The initiative, approved by President John Mahama, is expected to significantly ease travel restrictions across the continent. Officials say the move is designed to strengthen regional integration, boost tourism, and expand intra-African trade by removing longstanding barriers to mobility.

According to Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, the policy reflects the country’s ambition to position itself as a central hub for African connectivity and cooperation. “This is about breaking down borders and building bridges across the continent,” a ministry spokesperson noted, emphasising Ghana’s leadership role in advancing unity among African nations.

To support the transition, authorities will roll out an electronic visa platform next month. The system is intended to streamline entry processes, enhance border management, and provide a digital backbone for the new visa-free framework.

Analysts say the move places Ghana among a growing number of African countries adopting more open travel policies in line with broader continental efforts such as the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). If effectively implemented, the policy could serve as a model for deeper integration across the continent of Africa.
