President Bola Tinubu has announced plans by the Federal Government to deploy over 5,000 artificial intelligence-enabled digital cameras across Plateau State as part of efforts to combat rising insecurity.
The President made the disclosure on Thursday during a visit to Jos, where he also commiserated with the people of the state over the March 29 gun attacks in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area, which left several residents dead.
“I promise you that this experience will not repeat itself,” Tinubu assured grieving families and residents.
As part of immediate actions, the President directed the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, and the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible for the killings.
Mr Tinubu further announced that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijjani, would oversee the immediate rollout of the surveillance system in collaboration with Plateau State authorities and security agencies. The initiative will begin in Jos before expanding statewide, building on similar systems already deployed in Lagos and Enugu.
Expressing deep sorrow over the attacks, Tinubu said he was disturbed by graphic videos from the scene of the violence.
“It is only God that can give you joy and comfort. No amount of money can recompense for lost souls,” he told affected families at a meeting held at the Yakubu Gowon Airport.
The President also pledged justice for victims and directed the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Bernard Doro, to compile a comprehensive database of those affected to ensure equitable distribution of relief materials.
Addressing political leaders and stakeholders, Tinubu stressed the need for proactive strategies to prevent future attacks, noting that leadership must focus on peace, inclusiveness, and youth development.Politics
“We were elected on a promise of peace and security, not to create widows and widowers. I want to be here to establish peace, not to console,” he said.
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang described the March 29 incident as a setback, noting that the state had previously enjoyed relative peace. He commended security agencies for their efforts and expressed optimism that ongoing interventions would yield results.
“We will win this war against insecurity,” Mutfwang said, adding that his administration inherited longstanding challenges but remains committed to addressing them.
The governor also thanked the President for approving the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards to strengthen local security architecture.
National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, lauded Tinubu’s visit, describing it as a show of solidarity with Plateau residents. He expressed confidence that the President’s intervention would help curb the violence and support affected families.
Former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, called for a high-level stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja to find lasting solutions to the crisis. He warned that the spread of violence from rural areas into urban centres poses a dangerous new dimension.
Similarly, former governor Simon Lalong emphasised the need for local solutions, insisting that sustainable peace must come from within the Plateau community.
“It is not security agencies alone that will bring peace—Plateau people must be ready to resolve the crisis,” Lalong said, advocating a closed-door meeting with key stakeholders.
Also speaking, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Idris Wase, highlighted the urgency of strengthening security collaboration, particularly between the Air Force and ground troops, as the farming season approaches.
He revealed that recent attacks in Wase and Kanke claimed over 14 lives, including a Nigerian Army captain, underscoring the scale of the security challenge.
The President’s visit comes amid renewed concerns over escalating violence in Plateau State, with stakeholders urging a combination of technological, military, and community-driven approaches to restore lasting peace.
