The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has condemned the recent killing of some residents in Ishielu LGA of Ebonyi state.
At least 15 people were reportedly killed on Monday night, when gunmen invaded some communities in the state.
The attacks were said to have taken place in Nkalaha, Obegu, Amazu, Nkalagu and Umuhuali autonomous communities in Ishielu LGA.
Residents had accused herders of carrying out the attacks, but the police have not confirmed the the identities of the perpetrators.
David Umahi, governor of Ebonyi state, had also alleged that the attacks were carried out by persons bearing AK-47 rifles, adding that he will ensure the matter is addressed at the “highest level”.
Condemning the attack in an interview with NAN, Gidado Siddiki, south-east zonal chairman of MACBAN, described the incident as heartbreaking.
Siddiki, who asked security agents to arrest the attackers, appealed to residents not to rush into conclusions regarding the identity of the gunmen, until proper investigation is concluded.
“We are not happy with this incident. This is heartbreaking and our hearts bleed. We condole with the families of the deceased and the state government,” he said.
“As an association, we appeal to the security agencies not to leave any stone unturned in unravelling the circumstances behind the killing and the identity of the killers.”
Siddiki noted that herders in the area and members of their host communities had coexisted peacefully for years, adding that it would be shocking if the attack was committed by the herders.
