Four persons have been confirmed dead following a horrific fuel tanker explosion on Sunday afternoon in Agbor, Delta State.
The incident occurred along the old Lagos-Asaba Road, beside First Bank and Access Bank, after the tanker, which was reportedly carrying petrol, lost control.
The state government said the fire killed four persons. An eyewitness told SaharaReporters, however, said that no fewer than five people were killed in the explosion, while the police command confirmed the death of two.
The fire spread rapidly, engulfing the tanker and nearby buildings. The fire was so intense that people were running in all directions, an eyewitness said.
The explosion also caused significant damage to structures in the area, including First and Access banks.
Residents, caught in the devastating inferno, were seen scrambling for safety in viral videos, as the tanker and nearby structures were consumed by the flames.
Reacting to the incident, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori expressed deep sorrow, saying four persons were killed while three others sustained injuries.
The governor, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, described the incident as horrifying and extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives, while praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.
“It is with a heavy heart that I commiserate with the people of Ika South Local Government and the affected families.
This tragic incident is deeply saddening. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones at this difficult time,” the statement read.
