The newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Owoade, will tonight commence the 21-day traditional rites known as “Oro Ipebi”, a sacred ritual marking his transition to the revered throne.
In a statement released on Friday, Rotimi Osuntola, the Chief of Staff to the new monarch, announced that the rites will take place from March 7 to March 29, 2025. As part of the tradition, a curfew will be enforced from 8 PM to 6 AM daily across Oyo town, restricting movement during the period.
“The Alaafin of Oyo Kingdom hereby announces the commencement of ÒRÒ ÌPẸBÍ, the mandatory rites for His Imperial Majesty before his ascension to the revered throne of the Alaafin,” the statement read.
According to Osuntola, anyone found violating the curfew will be arrested and detained until 7 AM the following day. He emphasized that the Oro Ipebi ritual, which requires the new Alaafin to undergo absolute seclusion, remains an unbreakable tradition for any incoming ruler.
Following the completion of the rites, Owoade’s official coronation ceremony is set for April 5 in Oyo town, marking the final step in his ascension to the historic throne of the Alaafin.
