Special Adviser on Policy Communication to President Bola Tinubu, Daniel Bwala, has asserted that the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, will soon leave the party and join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Bwala expressed confidence that Obi will not contest the 2027 presidential election under the LP, predicting that he will follow in the footsteps of his political ally, Valentine Ozigbo, who recently defected to the APC.
The presidential aide made the statement on Wednesday, March 12, during an appearance on TVC’s Breakfast show, where he suggested that the exodus from the Labour Party is gaining momentum.
According to Bwala, Obi’s defection to the APC is only a matter of time, citing Ozigbo’s influence as a key factor.
“Do you know we are emptying the Labour Party, not because we asked them to come but because they are coming? Valentine Ozigbo has joined us. Balami has joined us. Even Peter Obi will join us. Peter Obi will not run on the Labour Party; we are all leaving the party,” he claimed.
He further emphasized: “For Valentine Ozigbo to come to our party, Ozigbo is actually the custodian of Peter Obi, then, I know for a fact that Peter Obi will join us.”
Three weeks ago, Ozigbo, a former governorship candidate in Anambra State, resigned from the Labour Party, citing internal crises.
Days after defecting to the APC, he openly expressed hope that Obi would also make the switch.
“I told him a few things, not about coming to the APC, but I would like to welcome him to the APC someday if he so desires,” Ozigbo stated.
While Bwala and Ozigbo are confident about Obi’s potential move to the APC, speculation has also grown about the possibility of him joining the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The rumored coalition against the ruling party gained traction after former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai left the APC to join the SDP.
Despite ongoing rumors, Obi has remained silent on his political future, even as the Labour Party has reaffirmed its commitment to zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to the South-East.
