A retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Abiodun Asabi, has highlighted inadequate support, particularly in funding, as a major challenge facing the Nigeria Police Force.
Asabi, a former Commissioner of Police in Ondo State, urged the Federal Government and other stakeholders to increase financial assistance and overall support to help curb criminal activities in the country.
He made this appeal while speaking with journalists during his retirement and pull-out parade at the Gani Fawehinmi Arcade in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Monday.
According to him, the Nigeria Police Force requires substantial backing from Nigerians to effectively combat rising insecurity nationwide.
He said, “With my experience in the Nigeria police, my observation is that people need to support the police much more than they are doing. This is lacking.

“There are a lot of gains if there are collective efforts with the police. So, all stakeholders, people that have the security of this nation at heart, should rally around and support the force so that they can do better in moving the country forward. There is a lot to gain by collective efforts.”
Reflecting on his 35 years of service, Asabi expressed joy and fulfillment in serving the force, emphasizing that his dedication was for the country’s progress.
“I will say that it’s a thing of joy to have served Nigeria. The service to the country is worthwhile. I love my country, that is why I enrolled to be enlisted in the force and I have never regretted for doing so,” he stated.
The AIG urged all police personnel and officers to carry out their duties with the highest level of integrity, professionalism, fairness, and transparency.
He also cautioned them against any form of corruption, warning that it could tarnish the reputation of the force.
Several colleagues and dignitaries who attended the event commended AIG Asabi’s dedication, integrity, and leadership, praising his contributions to crime prevention, community engagement, and police welfare.
Many described him as a model officer whose legacy will continue to inspire future generations of police officers.
Born on April 16, 1965, in Lagos, Asabi hails from Gbongan, the headquarters of Ayedaade Local Government Area in Osun State.
He joined the Nigeria Police Force as a cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on March 3, 1990.
