President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has firmly distanced himself from the proliferation of political billboards promoting his candidacy for the 2027 general elections, declaring that he neither supports nor authorizes any such campaign activity at this time.
The billboards—spotted prominently in Abuja, Kano, and several other Nigerian cities—feature images of President Tinubu, his wife Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and Vice President Kashim Shettima, projecting what appears to be an early re-election campaign.
In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency called on the sponsors of the billboards and any form of premature political promotion to “cease immediately.”
“The Presidency has observed, with dismay, the increasing number of billboards in some cities promoting the 2027 campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima,” the statement read.
While expressing gratitude to supporters for their enthusiasm and loyalty, the President made it clear that such actions violate the country’s electoral laws, which prohibit political campaigning outside the timeframe set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages,” the statement emphasized. “As law-abiding leaders, President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any action that undermines our institutions and the electoral process.”
President Tinubu reiterated that his administration is presently focused on critical national issues, including economic revitalization, human capital development, infrastructure renewal, social investment, and national security.
“Until INEC sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorized anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel—be it Out-of-Home, print, digital, radio, or television,” the Presidency clarified.
The President assured Nigerians that when the appropriate time comes, his intentions regarding the 2027 elections will be clearly communicated in accordance with the law.
