President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The announcement was made on Thursday during an expanded Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, as part of a national tribute to the former Nigerian leader.
The decision comes just days after Buhari’s burial in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State. His remains were flown from London aboard a Nigerian Air Force jet, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other senior government officials.
The janaza (Islamic funeral prayer) was observed at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday before his body was interred according to Islamic rites. Tight security surrounded the burial, with armoured vehicles, DSS operatives, and heavily armed soldiers stationed along major routes leading into Daura.
President Tinubu, alongside First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was present at the solemn ceremony. A high-powered delegation from the Republic of Niger also attended, underscoring Buhari’s regional significance and legacy.
The renaming of the University of Maiduguri marks a symbolic gesture of respect for the late former president, recognising his years of public service and influence in Nigeria’s political and military history.
