The revered paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91, marking the end of an extraordinary reign that spanned more than six decades.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning and most respected monarchs. He was a distinguished member of the royal House of Anikinaiya and a towering figure in the nation’s traditional institution.
A palace source confirmed the monarch’s passing to SaharaReporters on Sunday, revealing that he died at a hospital in Lagos. However, the source added that an official announcement could not yet be made due to customary protocols requiring the involvement of the Ogun State Government.
“It is confirmed, but we cannot officially announce it yet. You know he was a prominent king, and such matters must follow due traditional and state procedures,” the source explained.
Oba Adetona’s reported death comes just hours after the passing of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Both deaths have plunged the nation into a period of mourning.
The Awujale was widely regarded as a strong voice in national discourse.
