Niger State was thrown into chaos on Saturday evening after a woman identified as Amaye, a local food vendor, was lynched and set ablaze by a mob over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.
SaharaReporters learned that the incident occurred at the Kasuwar-Garba community in the Mariga Local Government Area of the state.
According to reports, the incident began when one of her customers jokingly spoke about marriage and made a reference to the Prophet. Amaye was said to have responded in a manner some considered blasphemous.
She was initially taken into police custody for investigation. However, before security operatives could reinforce, the mob overpowered the officers, forcefully took her away, and burned her alive.
Chairman of Mariga Local Government Area, Abbas Adamu Kasuwar-Garba, confirmed the development, saying normalcy has since returned to the area.
Also confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in Niger State, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the command received the report around 2:00 p.m. that the woman had allegedly made blasphemous remarks.
“Before additional reinforcements could be deployed, the crowd overpowered our officers, whisked her away, and set her ablaze,” he said. Abiodun added that investigations are ongoing and those found culpable will be brought to justice.
