The Lagos State Government has appealed to striking academic and non-academic staff of Lagos State University (LASU) to suspend their ongoing industrial action and return to the negotiating table for constructive dialogue.
The strike, which began on Thursday, July 31, was declared by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) an umbrella body representing all staff unions in LASU over unresolved welfare concerns.
Union members were directed to halt services and vacate their duty posts indefinitely.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, emphasized the state government’s commitment to resolving the dispute amicably.
“The government acknowledges the concerns raised by the JAC and has taken steps to engage with union representatives to address their grievances,” Sule said.
“However, we urge the unions to consider suspending the strike to give room for continued dialogue.”
He highlighted the government’s sustained efforts to prioritize the welfare of both workers and students, even amid mounting demands and the complexities of managing a rapidly expanding megacity.
Sule also disclosed that official communications from the unions had been received, and several high-level meetings had already taken place, including sessions with the State Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, and officials from the Ministry of Establishments and Training.
“During these meetings, it was mutually agreed that any action likely to disrupt academic and industrial peace at LASU should be suspended, allowing the government sufficient time to evaluate and respond to the unions’ demands,” he stated.
The Commissioner reiterated the Sanwo-Olu administration’s dedication to the welfare of all civil servants, including university staff, and reassured stakeholders that efforts were ongoing to reach a durable resolution.
“We appeal to the leadership of ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU, and NASU-LASU to reconsider their stance in the interest of students, whose education and future are directly impacted by the disruption,” Sule added.
He concluded by expressing optimism that continued engagement and goodwill would pave the way for a lasting resolution.
“We believe that with mutual trust, cooperation, and continuous engagement, a lasting solution that benefits all parties can be achieved.”
