The Osun State Police Command has apprehended Emmanuel Odeh, a fake lawyer accused of practicing law for nearly a decade and swindling clients out of over ₦50 million. Odeh allegedly used the alias A.O. Emmanuel to pose as a legitimate attorney, handling legal representation, estate agency, and public consultancy services.
According to reports, Odeh was arrested inside a courthouse in Abeokuta, Ogun State, while representing a client. His arrest was triggered by a suspicious victim who requested to see his “Call to Bar” certificate. Odeh subsequently confessed to being a 400-level law student at Benue State University.
Odeh is currently facing charges of impersonation and fraud. The Nigerian Bar Association condemned his actions, describing them as a serious stain on the legal profession. Authorities are now urging the public to verify lawyers’ credentials to avoid falling prey to similar scams.
Similar Incident: Interestingly, another fake lawyer, Adebowale Adeola Babatunde, was previously arrested in Osun State for practicing law without certification. Babatunde reportedly had over 10 years of experience as a fake lawyer and was charged by the police. The Ministry of Justice later took over the case.
