Justice Fatima Adamu of the Kano State High Court on Monday sentenced two men to death by hanging for killing Buhari Imam, a lecturer with Northwest University, Kano, during a robbery in 2016.
Justice Adamu convicted the defendants identified as Aliyu Hussaini of Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters and Amir Zakariyya of Unguwar Malam Quarters, both in Kumbotso Local Government Area, on three counts of conspiracy, armed robbery, and culpable homicide.
“The action of the defendants shows total disregard for human life. I hereby sentence the defendants to five years’ imprisonment each for conspiracy, 10 years’ imprisonment each for robbery without an option of fine, and death by hanging for culpable homicide. May God have mercy on them,” Justice Adamu ruled.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Lamido Sorondinki, told the court that the convicts committed the offenses on June 11, 2016.
Sorondinki told the court that the convicts conspired, armed themselves with knives and machetes, and attacked Imam at his residence in Sheka Sabuwar Abuja Quarters.
He said that the attackers robbed the lecturer of his mobile phone and stabbed him multiple times in the stomach, thigh, and back, resulting in his death.
The prosecution called three witnesses and tendered medical reports and photographs of the deceased as evidence to establish its case.
Although the defendants denied the charges, the court found them guilty after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to the court, the offenses contravened Sections 97(1), 298(c), and 221(a) of the Penal Code Laws of Kano State.
Before the sentence was handed down, the defense counsel, Haruna Zakariyya, had pleaded for leniency on behalf of the convicts, a plea that was not given a positive consideration by the court.
