China has warned against any form of external interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs following threats by the United States government under President Donald Trump to consider military action over alleged persecution of Christians in the country.
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Beijing stands firmly with President Bola Tinubu’s administration as it leads Nigeria on what she described as a “development path suited to its national conditions.”
“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs or threaten them with sanctions and force,” Ning said.
She reiterated China’s position on respecting national sovereignty and the right of each country to independently determine its development model without external pressure or coercion.
The Chinese official was responding to questions regarding comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently threatened potential military action in Nigeria over alleged human rights abuses and religious persecution.
Trump’s remarks have stirred diplomatic tensions, with several Nigerian officials and commentators describing the threat as “an affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty.”
Observers note that China’s latest statement further highlights the growing global divide between Washington and Beijing, especially as both powers seek to expand their influence in Africa.
With China’s reaffirmation of support for the Tinubu government, analysts warn that Nigeria could become a flashpoint in the ongoing geopolitical rivalry between the U.S. and China.
