An elderly woman has been confirmed dead after she was struck by a white Pathfinder Jeep allegedly driven by a reckless drunken driver along Almaroof, inward Pleasure, Oke-Odo, Lagos State, over the weekend.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, the vehicle with registration number JJJ 118 HX was being driven at a dangerously high speed when the driver, said to be under the influence of alcohol, lost control following a brake failure.
The vehicle veered off the road and rammed into the unsuspecting woman, who was walking along the roadside.
“The impact was catastrophic, resulting in her instantaneous demise,” Taofiq stated.
Taofiq said that LASTMA officials at the scene swiftly intervened, and arrested the driver as he attempted to flee.
The area was immediately cordoned off to prevent secondary accidents and ensure smooth traffic flow.
Taofiq added that officers from the Ile-Epo Police Division were quickly notified and arrived to provide security reinforcement and take over the investigation.
The severely damaged vehicle was subsequently towed away and handed over to the Police for further forensic examination.
Through a mobile phone recovered from the deceased, Taofiq said LASTMA officials were able to identify and contact her family members.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed outrage over the continued loss of lives on Lagos roads due to reckless and intoxicated driving.
Bakare-Oki condemned the act as an egregious display of indiscipline and moral decay, warning that such behaviour would no longer be tolerated.
“The sanctity of human life is inviolable. The continued slaughter of innocent citizens through sheer recklessness and moral irresponsibility is intolerable.
“Every motorist must imbibe discipline, sobriety, and an abiding respect for human life while navigating our roads,” Bakare-Oki said.
He urged law enforcement agencies to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that the errant driver faces appropriate prosecution under existing traffic and criminal laws of Lagos State.
