Toun Soetan
Toun Soetan, the veteran gospel singer and evangelist, has passed away.
Tributes have pouring in from colleagues and fans. Among those who paid homage was Ayo Ajewole, the comic actor popularly known as Woli Agba.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Woli Agba bid farewell to the singer, noting that her lifestyle was one that glorified Jesus.
The comic actor also prayed for her peaceful rest, describing her as having “transitioned into glory to meet the Lord”.
“The message remained the same. The lifestyle remained that which glorifies Jesus. Your transition into Glory to meet The Lord Jesus happened today,” he wrote.
“Our dear Legendary Mummy Toun Soetan hmmmmm Mummy, Sing with the Angels. Mummy, wow, goodnight. May God be with our beloved daddy and the family.”
Songwriter Yemi TPX expressed gratitude to the late singer for impacting the lives of the older generation during their youth.
He also commended Yetunde Are, daughter of Bola Are, for recently featuring Soetan in a studio performance.
“Rest on Mama Toun Soetan. You have already lived a life of purpose and Impact on my many. Thank you for all the Childhood gospel songs you bless us with,” Yemi wrote.
“KEEP RESTING Mama Toun Soetan. @Minister @officialzionyetundeare. Thank you for doing this for mama and others if not many millions wouldn’t have known the artist behind many uplifting praise songs we used to sing as children those years till now.”
Toun Soetan was born in Lagos but spent her childhood in Ibadan, Oyo state. She converted to Christianity after attending a service at Oritamefa Baptist Church in Ibadan.
She worked as a teacher for 16 years before transitioning fully into ministry.
She went on to found Trinity World Evangelical Ministries and Trinity School of Worship, where she trained musicians and gospel ministers.
With a career spanning over four decades, she became widely recognised as one of Nigeria’s pioneering gospel singers, known for spiritually uplifting songs such as ‘Train Up Your Child,’ ‘Help’ and ‘Darling Jesus’.
The singer is survived by her husband Titus Soetan and her family.
