Iran’s military has threatened retaliation after accusing the United States of targeting one of its commercial vessels in the Gulf of Oman, raising fresh tensions over an already fragile ceasefire.
A spokesperson for Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters said the ship, which was reportedly travelling from China to Iran, came under fire from US forces.
“We warn that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will soon respond and retaliate against this armed piracy by the US military,” the spokesperson said, according to state media.
The latest exchange comes hours after both sides accused each other of breaching the ceasefire agreement.
Donald Trump, in a social media post, alleged that Iran violated the truce by opening fire in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Violation of our Ceasefire Agreement,” Trump wrote, adding that Iran “decided to fire bullets yesterday in the Strait of Hormuz”.
“That wasn’t nice, was it?” he added, claiming the shots were “aimed at a French Ship, and a Freighter from the United Kingdom”.
Trump also criticised Iran’s decision to shut the strait, describing it as counterproductive.
“They’re helping us without knowing, and they are the ones that lose with the closed passage, $500 Million Dollars a day! The United States loses nothing,” he said.
Iran, however, has pushed back, accusing the US of escalating tensions through a naval blockade of its ports.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, described the blockade as a breach of the ceasefire and a violation of international law.
He said the move was “unlawful and criminal” and cited provisions of the United Nations Charter and a UN resolution which he said prohibit such actions.
Baghaei further accused the US of committing a war crime.
He said the blockade amounted to “deliberately inflicting collective punishment on the Iranian population” and described it as a “crime against humanity”.
The situation highlights growing strain between both countries, with accusations and counter-accusations continuing despite efforts to maintain a ceasefire.
