Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have rescued a mentally challenged woman and her newborn baby girl after she was delivered of her along a roadside in Kwali Area Council of Abuja.
The incident occurred in the early hours of April 3, 2026, at about 12:30am, when officers of the Rapid Response Squad on routine patrol reportedly discovered the unidentified woman in distress in Kwaita Village, where she had just given birth.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the officers immediately alerted relevant units upon finding the woman and her newborn in a vulnerable condition.
“Police officers of the Rapid Response Squad, who were on patrol in Kwali, reported the case of an unidentified mentally challenged woman who had delivered a baby girl along the roadside,” the statement said.
“Upon receipt of the information, the Officer in Charge of the Gender Unit, Kwali Division, alongside her team, promptly mobilised to the scene.”
According to the statement, the Gender Unit acted swiftly to evacuate both mother and child from the scene to the General Hospital, Kwali, where they were given urgent medical attention.
“The mother and her newborn were safely rescued and immediately conveyed to General Hospital, Kwali, where they received medical attention and were subsequently discharged in stable condition,” Adeh added.
The police further disclosed that in line with standard welfare procedures, relevant authorities were contacted to ensure the continued care and protection of the mother and her baby.
“In line with standard welfare procedures, the Officer in Charge of Welfare, Kwali Area Council, Mr Sadiq Kwali, was duly contacted. The mother and child were thereafter handed over to him for further care,” the statement noted.
“They have been relocated to the FCT Children’s Home in Wako, Gwagwalada Area Council, where they will receive proper care and support.”
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Ahmed Mohammed Sanusi, commended the officers involved for their professionalism and compassion in handling the situation.
“The swift response and dedication displayed by the officers involved is highly commendable,” the CP said.
“It is particularly noteworthy that the first responders, despite being male personnel, showed exceptional empathy and professionalism in assisting the mentally challenged mother and ensuring the safety of the newborn before the arrival of the Gender Unit.”
Sanusi stressed the importance of humane policing, noting that such interventions reflect the core values of the Nigeria Police Force.
“This incident underscores the importance of vigilance, compassion, and timely response in saving lives, especially in emergency situations involving vulnerable members of society,” he said.
He also called on members of the public to play an active role in supporting security agencies by promptly reporting emergencies and distressed individuals.
“We urge residents to remain vigilant, show empathy, and promptly report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines,” he added.
The police reiterated that community cooperation remains crucial in addressing humanitarian situations and ensuring the safety and well-being of residents across the FCT.
