In an era where journalism and media practice are rapidly evolving under the influence of technology, digital transformation and changing audience behaviour, the need for continuous learning and innovation has become more urgent than ever.
Across Nigeria and the broader African media landscape, journalists and content creators are navigating new realities shaped by artificial intelligence, social media disruption, data journalism and audience-driven storytelling.
Against this backdrop, MTN Nigeria has continued to position itself as a key supporter of media development through its Media Innovation Programme (MIP), an initiative designed to equip media professionals with the knowledge, skills and exposure required to remain relevant in an increasingly competitive environment.
This commitment was reaffirmed with the announcement of 25 media practitioners and digital content creators selected for the fifth cohort of the programme, marking another milestone in the initiative’s growing impact on Nigeria’s media ecosystem.
Implemented in collaboration with the School of Media and Communication at Pan-Atlantic University, the programme has steadily evolved into one of the country’s leading fellowship opportunities for journalists and media professionals.
Expanding Opportunities for Media Professionals
This year’s edition carries symbolic significance beyond the usual fellowship cycle. In celebration of MTN Nigeria’s 25th anniversary, the organisation expanded the number of fellows from 20 to 25 participants.
The increase reflects not only the programme’s growth but also a broader commitment to creating opportunities for more professionals seeking to adapt to the changing demands of the industry.
The selected fellows emerged from a highly competitive application process involving practitioners from print, broadcast, digital journalism and content creation sectors.
Their diverse backgrounds also highlight the changing nature of journalism itself. Modern storytelling increasingly transcends traditional newsroom structures, embracing multimedia reporting, digital content creation and audience engagement strategies that were almost non-existent a decade ago.
The selected fellows include professionals from major media organisations and platforms such as BBC News, Premium Times, News Agency of Nigeria, Nigerian Tribune, TechCabal, TVC Communications and several others.
The list also includes broadcasters, presenters, editors, reporters and digital creators—an indication of how wide the media ecosystem has become.
Beyond Training: A Platform for Transformation
Speaking during the opening session of the programme, Tobe Okigbo described the fellowship as more than a conventional training initiative.
According to him, the Media Innovation Programme embodies values central to MTN’s broader vision, including innovation, knowledge-sharing, collaboration and strategic partnerships.
He explained that the fellowship creates an environment where participants are encouraged to challenge assumptions, revisit ideas and expand their perspectives.
The emphasis, according to MTN, is not merely on acquiring technical skills but on encouraging intellectual curiosity and professional growth.
Such an approach reflects a shift in contemporary professional development models where adaptability and critical thinking have become just as important as technical competence.
Reimagining Journalism in a Changing World
For many media practitioners today, one of the biggest challenges lies in balancing speed with accuracy, audience engagement with ethics, and innovation with responsibility.
These issues were highlighted by Ikechukwu Obiaya, who encouraged participants to view the fellowship as a transformative experience rather than simply another career achievement.
According to him, the programme goes beyond professional advancement by placing significant emphasis on values such as truth, honesty, ethics and social responsibility.
His comments reflect ongoing concerns within global media circles regarding misinformation, declining public trust and the pressures created by an increasingly fast-paced digital information environment.
As technology reshapes how information is produced and consumed, industry experts continue to stress that innovation without ethical standards could undermine journalism’s fundamental role in society.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
The six-month programme, which commenced on May 18, 2026, offers participants intensive learning in media innovation, digital transformation, strategic communication, storytelling and leadership development.
However, one of the programme’s defining features remains its blend of classroom instruction with practical exposure.
Participants will also embark on a one-week study visit to South Africa, offering an international perspective and opportunities to learn from broader media practices beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Exposure to global experiences has increasingly become important for journalists operating in interconnected information ecosystems where local stories frequently carry international dimensions.
For participants, such experiences could provide valuable insights into emerging trends, newsroom innovations and sustainable media business models.
Strengthening the Future of Nigerian Media
Over the years, the Media Innovation Programme has developed into more than a fellowship initiative; it has gradually become a platform for nurturing future industry leaders.
Its growing reputation suggests that media organisations and professionals increasingly recognise the importance of continuous development in an industry where change remains constant.
As Nigeria’s media sector continues to evolve amid technological disruptions and changing audience expectations, initiatives like the Media Innovation Programme may play a critical role in preparing professionals not just for today’s realities but for future challenges yet to emerge.
For MTN Nigeria, the programme also reflects a broader vision—supporting journalism, encouraging excellence and empowering professionals whose work shapes public conversations and influences society.
In many ways, the story of the Media Innovation Programme is not simply about selecting 25 fellows. It is about investing in ideas, strengthening institutions and contributing to the future of media in Nigeria and across the continent.
