The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that its operatives rescued a trapped driver and passenger following a multi-vehicle crash along the Motorway inward Toll-Gate corridor in the Ogudu-Alapere axis of Lagos State.
The incident involved a heavily laden 12-tyre DAF articulated truck and a commercial Volkswagen T4 bus marked AA 60 YF, which was severely damaged in the collision.
In a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA said the crash resulted in a dangerous obstruction and left occupants of the bus trapped.
“Preliminary security investigations revealed that the commercial bus somersaulted following a violent impact, leaving both its driver and a passenger trapped within the severely mangled wreckage, while simultaneously causing a major obstruction along the affected carriageway,” the statement read.
According to LASTMA, its officers who were on routine patrol quickly responded and activated emergency rescue procedures to prevent further casualties and restore traffic flow.
The agency said its personnel worked alongside other emergency responders to extricate the victims from the wreckage.
“Demonstrating remarkable courage, operational proficiency and unwavering dedication to duty, LASTMA personnel, with invaluable support from other emergency response agencies, successfully extricated the trapped victims from the crumpled vehicle and facilitated their immediate evacuation for urgent medical attention by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS),” the statement added.
It further noted that the scene was secured to prevent secondary accidents and ensure smooth rescue operations.
“The accident scene was promptly cordoned off and secured to guarantee the safety of emergency responders, rescue personnel and other road users traversing the corridor during the operation,” LASTMA said.
Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Ketu Division also provided security support during the exercise.
“In a concerted effort to restore normalcy, the damaged vehicles were evacuated from the roadway, while LASTMA traffic officers implemented strategic traffic-control and diversionary measures to ease the severe congestion triggered by the incident and mitigate the resultant traffic backlog within the axis,” the agency stated.
Commending the operatives, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, praised their swift response and professionalism.
“The successful rescue operation that saved the lives of the two victims further exemplifies the Agency’s enduring commitment to the preservation of human lives, enhancement of public safety and effective traffic management across Lagos State,” he said.
He also urged motorists, especially drivers of articulated vehicles and commercial transport operators, to adhere strictly to safety regulations.
