A judge of the Federal High Court attached to the Kano Division, Justice Mohammed Nasir Yunusa, has died after reportedly collapsing at his residence.
According to reports, Justice Yunusa suddenly slumped in the living room of his home and was immediately rushed to a hospital for medical attention. However, he was pronounced dead by doctors upon arrival.
Sources within the Federal High Court in Abuja disclosed that the jurist died on Thursday evening and was laid to rest on Friday in accordance with Islamic rites.
A source described the late judge as a dedicated and hardworking judicial officer who handled several high-profile cases during his career.
“Yes, the judge died Thursday evening and he has been buried. He was very hardworking during his lifetime. You know he handled many high-profile cases and dispensed justice accordingly,” the source said.
Confirming the development, the Director of Information of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Catherine Oby Christopher, stated that Justice Yunusa passed away at the State Medical Centre in Kano.
Justice Yunusa presided over several notable cases, including matters arising from the aftermath of the 2023 general elections. Among the high-profile cases linked to him was the legal dispute involving the candidature of , then Governor-elect of Abia State.
At the time, the Federal High Court in Kano clarified that it did not nullify Otti’s candidature despite controversies surrounding Labour Party candidates.
The judge had also ruled that candidates who participated in the 2023 general elections in Abia State were not parties before his court and therefore could not be affected by the ruling.
“This court lacks jurisdiction to make an order for the issuance of certificate of return. They are at liberty to seek redress in the appropriate Division of the court,” Justice Yunusa had ruled.
