As pilgrims from across the world, including Nigerians, converged on Mount Arafat today, marking the zenith of the 2026 Hajj in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the leadership of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) organised a special prayer session for Nigeria as part of its activities in the plains of Arafat.
The prayer session, which had members of the National Ulama Team of the commission, members of the National Assembly, NAHCON management, and some pilgrims in attendance, was organised by the commission to seek Allah’s intercession in the affairs of Nigeria.
Speaking at the prayer session, NAHCON Chairman/CEO, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, said the commission decided to organise the intercessory prayers in view of the current realities in the country.
Represented by NAHCON’s Commissioner for Planning, Research, Information and Library Services, Professor Abubakar Yagawwal, Yusuf said the current rates of terrorism, banditry, kidnappings, among others, required that all Nigerians turn to Allah for divine intervention.
The NAHCON boss urged Nigerian pilgrims to include Nigeria in their prayers as they also pray for themselves.
Also speaking at the event, a member of the House of Representatives, Honourable Sani Aliyu Madaki, commended the leadership of NAHCON for deeming it fit to organise the prayer session in the midst of its activities aimed at ensuring a hitch-free Hajj for Nigerian pilgrims.
Highlights of the prayer session were prayers offered in many Nigerian languages, including Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, Nupe, Afemai, Arabic and English.
Different clerics prayed for peace, security, development and a successful 2027 general election devoid of crises.
In another development, the commission extended its heartfelt prayers and warm greetings to Nigerian pilgrims on the occasion of their successful participation in the significant Arafat Day.
According to a statement by the management of the commission, the blessed day of Arafat reminds Muslim faithful of the values of humility, sacrifice, patience, unwavering faith and deep reflection, as well as sincere repentance.
“As Nigerian pilgrims join millions of Muslims across the world on the sacred Day of Arafat, we extend heartfelt prayers and warm greetings to all our pilgrims on this significant occasion.
“The Day of Arafat stands as the pinnacle of Hajj, a day of mercy, forgiveness, supplication and total submission to Almighty Allah.
“This blessed day reminds us of the timeless values of humility, sacrifice, patience and unwavering faith. It is a moment for deep reflection, sincere repentance and renewed commitment to righteousness and service to humanity.
“History teaches us valuable lessons, and when we fail to learn from them, we risk repeating the same hardships. But when we reflect on yesterday with wisdom, we are better prepared to build a stronger and more rewarding tomorrow,” the commission stated.
The Hajj commission assured Nigerians that it would continue to improve and enhance Nigerian pilgrims’ welfare and comfort.
According to NAHCON, “At the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), we have continued to study the experiences of previous and current Hajj operations with the aim of improving our processes and enhancing the welfare and comfort of Nigerian pilgrims.
“We have indeed come a long way from the days when pilgrims spent long periods in transit camps awaiting airlift, to more coordinated and efficient Hajj operations we witness today. Yet, despite the progress made, we remain conscious that there is still room for improvement.”
The commission added that following the spiritually significant gathering at Arafat, where all mankind stands equal before their Creator, it would continue to review operational challenges observed during this year’s Hajj with a view to correcting shortcomings and strengthening supervision to better safeguard the interests of Nigerian pilgrims.
It further stated that NAHCON was established as a response to many of the challenges that once affected Hajj administration in Nigeria, and that it remains committed to upholding the vision of its founding fathers with dedication, discipline and sincerity of purpose.
