Tragedy struck in Abuja after a 29-year-old woman, identified as Blessing Moshood, a Sociology graduate of Kogi State University, was allegedly murdered and her body dumped in a canal in the Jikwoyi area of the Federal Capital Territory.
According to reports, Blessing left her family home on Thursday night at about 8 p.m. after receiving a phone call. Her sister, Abigail Moshood, recounted that Blessing later contacted the family approximately an hour later, saying she intended to briefly return home to pick up her phone charger, which she had forgotten.
However, concern grew when she failed to return home that night and could not be reached the following day.
Speaking on the heartbreaking incident, Abigail said the family’s fears worsened after residents began discussing the discovery of a woman’s body inside a canal. She explained that someone had described the hairstyle of the deceased, which matched Blessing’s.
“We later heard people talking about the body of a woman discovered inside a canal, and someone described the hairstyle she had on, which matched my sister’s,” she said.
“My mother immediately started crying, and we also learnt that officers from the Jikwoyi Police Station had evacuated the corpse to a mortuary in Mararaba, Nasarawa State. She was found half-naked with only a top on.”
Abigail further stated that she later visited the police station, where officers showed her photographs that confirmed the victim was indeed her sister.
Neighbours described Blessing as a bright and warm personality whose death has left many devastated.
A resident, Margaret, said Blessing was intelligent and academically accomplished.
“I learnt she graduated with a Second Class Upper in Sociology, and whenever she spoke, you could hardly fault her English,” she said.
“She was also very friendly in this neighbourhood and will be greatly missed by everyone, especially the children who have been crying since hearing of her death.”
Another resident, Abdullahi Musa, called on security agencies to intensify efforts against criminal activities in the area, particularly around the vicinity of Jikwoyi Medical Centre, where he alleged incidents of phone snatching and related crimes frequently occur.
Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing. A police officer at the Jikwoyi Police Station, who spoke anonymously, said detectives had commenced inquiries into the matter.
The spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, Josephine Adeh, also confirmed the incident, assuring the public that efforts are underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding Blessing’s death and bring those responsible to justice.
