The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recorded 581,298 completed voter registrations nationwide as of May 29, 2026, in the third week of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) Phase III exercise.
Figures released by the commission showed that 321,921 applicants completed their registration online, while 259,377 completed the physical registration process, bringing the total number of registrants to 581,298.
Kano recorded the highest number of registrations with 49,603, followed by Sokoto with 32,293 and Lagos with 27,294. Jigawa and Kaduna registered 26,576 and 26,449 voters respectively.
Other states with high registration figures included Taraba with 24,516, Niger with 24,278, Nasarawa with 22,829, Katsina with 21,525 and Gombe with 21,813.
The Federal Capital Territory recorded 8,350 registrations, while Akwa Ibom posted the lowest figure among active states with 4,834 registrants.
INEC noted that the figures remain preliminary and are subject to further data clean-up through the Automated Biometric Identification System as well as the resolution of claims and objections by citizens.
The commission also disclosed that voter registration remained suspended in Ekiti and Osun states because of the forthcoming governorship elections, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.
Women outnumber men in latest voter registration exercise
Women accounted for the majority of new voter registrants in the third week of the Continuous Voter Registration Phase III exercise, according to data released by the commission.
Out of the 581,298 completed registrations recorded nationwide as of May 29, 2026, female registrants stood at 304,256, representing 52.34 per cent of the total, while male registrants numbered 277,042 or 47.66 per cent.
The data further showed that young people aged between 18 and 34 years dominated the registration exercise, accounting for 409,862 registrants or 70.51 per cent of the total.
Registrants aged 35 to 49 years numbered 118,906, representing 20.46 per cent, while those aged 50 to 69 years stood at 47,704 or 8.21 per cent.
Only 4,826 persons aged 70 years and above registered during the period, accounting for 0.83 per cent of the total.
The figures underscore the growing participation of women and young Nigerians in the electoral process ahead of future elections.
INEC said the registrations are preliminary and remain subject to data verification and clean-up procedures.
Students lead occupational profile of new voter registrants
Students emerged as the largest occupational group among Nigerians who completed voter registration during the third week of the Continuous Voter Registration Phase III exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Data released by the commission showed that 142,667 students registered during the period, accounting for 24.54 per cent of the 581,298 completed registrations nationwide.
Business owners followed with 121,260 registrations or 20.86 per cent, while those engaged in farming and fishing accounted for 107,565 registrations, representing 18.50 per cent.
Housewives made up 103,695 registrants or 17.84 per cent, while artisans accounted for 23,832 registrations. Traders numbered 22,852, civil servants 11,799, and public servants 6,510.
The commission also disclosed that 9,018 persons with disabilities completed their registration during the period.
Among registered persons with disabilities, the largest category was classified as “Others” with 4,641 registrants, followed by persons with albinism at 1,284 and those with physical impediments at 736.
Other categories included blindness, deafness, autism, cognitive learning disabilities, little stature, Down syndrome and spinal cord injuries.
INEC said the figures were preliminary and would be subjected to further verification through its biometric identification and validation processes.
Young Nigerians account for seven in 10 new voter registrations
Young Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 34 accounted for more than 70 per cent of all new voter registrations recorded during the third week of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Continuous Voter Registration Phase III exercise.
Data released by INEC showed that 409,862 of the 581,298 completed registrations fell within the age bracket, representing 70.51 per cent of the total.
The commission’s figures indicated that voters aged 35 to 49 years accounted for 118,906 registrations or 20.46 per cent, while those aged between 50 and 69 years numbered 47,704, representing 8.21 per cent.
Only 4,826 registrants were aged 70 years and above, accounting for less than one per cent of the total registrations recorded during the period.
The development highlights the increasing role of young people in Nigeria’s electoral process as preparations continue for future elections.
INEC said the figures remain provisional pending biometric verification and other validation procedures.
Over 9,000 persons with disabilities register in CVR exercise
No fewer than 9,018 persons with disabilities completed voter registration during the third week of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Continuous Voter Registration Phase III exercise.
According to data released by the commission, the figure forms part of the 581,298 completed registrations recorded nationwide as of May 29, 2026.
The largest category among registrants with disabilities was classified as “Others”, accounting for 4,641 registrations. Persons with albinism followed with 1,284 registrations, while 736 persons with physical impediments also completed the process.
The data further showed that 494 persons with blindness, 413 with deafness, 361 with cognitive learning disabilities and 347 persons with spinal cord injuries registered during the exercise.
Other categories included autism, little stature and Down syndrome.
The registration figures underscore efforts by the electoral commission to promote inclusiveness and ensure broader participation of persons with disabilities in the democratic process.
INEC noted that all registrations remain subject to data clean-up and verification through its Automated Biometric Identification System before final certification.
