Fortunate Kyarikunda, a law enforcement officer at Rubanda Town Council, has been sentenced to up to six months in Rukungiri Prison for failing to repay her former partner, Richard Tumwiine.
The couple began dating around 2015 and agreed to marry in 2018. Tumwiine, a teacher, sponsored her diploma in legal studies, spending USh 9.4 million. Kyarikunda later called off the marriage plans in 2022, citing Tumwiine’s advanced age — he was in his 60s while she was in her 30s — and saying the relationship would cause her stress.
Tumwiine sued for breach of promise to marry, stating he wanted to set an example. In 2023, the court ordered her to refund USh 9.4 million plus USh 1 million in damages.
By March 2026, the debt had grown to USh 14,099,100 including costs. On March 10, 2026, Rukungiri Grade One Magistrate Dinah Nekesa committed her to civil prison for non-payment.
