President Donald Trump
A majority of Americans believe President Donald Trump is not mentally or physically fit to effectively serve in the White House, according to recent national polls that indicate growing public concerns about his health and capacity to lead.
The findings come amid increasing scrutiny of the 79-year-old president’s public appearances, decision-making, and overall fitness for office.
According to a Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll conducted in May 2026, 59 percent of respondents said Trump does not possess the mental sharpness required to serve effectively as president, while 55 percent said he is not physically healthy enough to carry out the responsibilities of the office.
Only 40 percent of those surveyed said the president has the mental acuity necessary for the role, while 44 percent considered him physically fit to serve.
The poll reflects a growing perception among Americans that age-related concerns may be affecting Trump’s ability to perform presidential duties, despite assurances from his administration that he remains in good health.
Similarly, a Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted earlier this year found that 61 percent of Americans believe Trump has become more erratic with age. The poll also showed that less than half of respondents considered him mentally sharp enough to handle the challenges associated with the presidency.
The White House has repeatedly dismissed concerns about the president’s health, insisting that Trump remains fully capable of discharging his constitutional responsibilities.
Administration officials point to his public engagements, policy initiatives, and work schedule as evidence of his continued effectiveness in office.
Supporters of the president have also rejected suggestions that he is unfit to lead, arguing that public opinion polls do not constitute medical evaluations and should not be treated as definitive assessments of a person’s health or cognitive abilities.
Political analysts note that concerns about age and fitness have become increasingly prominent in American politics, particularly as both major parties continue to field older candidates for the nation’s highest office.
While the surveys indicate widespread public concern, they represent perceptions rather than medical diagnoses. No official medical assessment has concluded that Trump is unable to perform the duties of the presidency.
The latest polling data nevertheless underscores the challenge facing the Trump administration as questions surrounding the president’s health and fitness continue to shape public discourse ahead of future political contests.
