Operatives of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command have rescued five kidnapped victims during a joint security operation in the Byazhin area of Abuja, while two suspected kidnappers were killed and two others arrested.
The rescue operation, carried out on Tuesday night, followed recent cases of abduction reported in the Paze community of Byazhin, located within Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the operation was led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Sanusi, and involved personnel from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Nigeria Police Force Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Kubwa Area Command, as well as local hunters and vigilante groups.
According to the statement, the operation commenced at about 9 p.m. on June 9, 2026, with security operatives conducting an extensive search-and-rescue mission across the affected communities.
“The FCT Police Command has successfully rescued five kidnapped victims following an intensive joint rescue operation conducted in the Byazhin area of the Federal Capital Territory,” Adeh said.
She explained that the security team launched the operation in response to a series of kidnapping incidents that had heightened tension among residents of Paze and neighbouring communities.
During the operation, security personnel reportedly encountered the kidnappers in a forested area, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.
“The team engaged suspected kidnappers in a gun duel, resulting in the neutralisation of two suspects and the arrest of two others identified as Icheh Mohammadu and Abubakar Usman, while other gang members fled into nearby hills with varying degrees of bullet wounds,” the statement added.
The police spokesperson said the five abducted victims were rescued unharmed and reunited with their families.
She noted that efforts were ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects and dismantle the remaining elements of the criminal gang.
The Commissioner of Police commended the operatives, local hunters and vigilante members who participated in the operation, describing their collaboration as critical to the success of the mission.
He also reassured residents of the FCT of the command’s commitment to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes, urging members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
The latest operation comes amid sustained efforts by security agencies to tackle kidnapping and related criminal activities in parts of the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring communities.
