The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a man after recovering an unauthorised firearm cleverly concealed inside a loaf of bread during a routine stop-and-search operation in Port Harcourt.
According to the police, the incident occurred along Azikiwe Road near the Red Cross Junction when operatives intercepted a vehicle and conducted a thorough search of its occupants.
The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, disclosed in a statement issued on Friday that officers discovered a Browning pistol hidden inside a loaf of bread in the possession of a passenger identified as Braya Nanas, a resident of New Road, Borikiri, Port Harcourt.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm had no visible serial number, raising concerns about its source and possible intended use.
The suspect reportedly admitted ownership of the weapon and told investigators that he purchased the pistol in Okrika, near Port Harcourt, for N800,000.
The statement read in part: “A Browning pistol, ingeniously concealed inside a loaf of bread, was recovered from one Braya Nanas, who was travelling as a passenger in the vehicle. Preliminary investigation revealed that the firearm had no visible serial number, raising concerns about its origin and intended use.”
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, described the discovery as evidence of the increasingly deceptive methods being employed by criminal elements to evade law enforcement.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and security-conscious, advising them to promptly report suspicious individuals, packages and activities to the nearest police station.
Adepoju also warned members of the public against accepting, transporting or storing items whose contents are unknown, noting that such actions could unintentionally aid criminal activities.
