The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria has raised concern over the devastating impact of tobacco use in Nigeria, revealing that between 26,000 and 28,000 Nigerians die every year from tobacco-related illnesses.
The association also disclosed that smoking-attributable diseases impose an estimated economic burden of about ₦634 billion annually on the country through healthcare costs, productivity losses, and premature deaths.
According to ACPN, tobacco consumption remains a major public health challenge, contributing significantly to the prevalence of non-communicable diseases such as lung cancer, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disease, and stroke.
The pharmacists’ body called for stricter enforcement of tobacco control regulations, increased public awareness campaigns, and stronger measures to discourage tobacco use, particularly among young people.
The association emphasised the need for collaborative efforts among government agencies, healthcare professionals, civil society organisations, and communities to reduce tobacco consumption and mitigate its health and economic consequences.
ACPN noted that effective implementation of tobacco control policies would not only save thousands of lives annually but also reduce the enormous financial burden tobacco-related diseases place on Nigeria’s healthcare system and economy.
