A 35-year-old woman, identified as Osasere, has been arrested by the Edo State Police Command after she was allegedly caught throwing her baby into the River Ovia in Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.
According to a viral video of the incident that surfaced on Tuesday evening, she was intercepted by fishermen who witnessed the act. She reportedly escaped being lynched after claiming that a seer had told her the baby was a python.
The five-year-old baby girl, it was gathered, had weak limbs that prevented her from walking like other children of her age.
The arrested mother was said to have suffered more than two miscarriages after the birth of her first child.
Osasere was reportedly taken to a spiritualist, who allegedly told her that the five-year-old girl was a python and was responsible for “swallowing” her pregnancies.
The seer was said to have instructed her to throw the child into the river and watch her turn into a python if she was ever to have another child.
Efforts to retrieve the body of the baby had, as of press time, been unsuccessful.
The fishermen, who witnessed the act from their fishing boat, pursued her and dragged her into a canoe in an attempt to search for the baby.
Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Eno Ikoedem, said the woman and the seer had been arrested.
In a related development, a couple from Benue State, Charity Jacob and Monday John, have also been arrested for allegedly attempting to sell a two-year-old girl for N3 million.
The couple was arrested while attempting to hand over the baby to buyers.
It was gathered that the child was stolen from her mother.
The Edo Police Command PPRO said operatives attached to the Irrua Division intercepted the suspects in possession of the child near MOPO Junction, Irrua.
She said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects conspired with others to unlawfully sell the child for the sum of three million naira (₦3,000,000).”
She added that the suspects are in custody and investigations are ongoing to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the case.
