Sensi-Contugi and his wife were among those killed, Ecuadorian state media reported. José Suárez, an executive with Spanish-language television network Telemundo, was also identified as one of the victims, according to CNN.

The deaths of the five American nationals were confirmed by the United States Department of State, which said the US Embassy in Kenya was working with local authorities and providing consular assistance.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones on their loss,” a State Department spokesperson said.

Kenyan emergency responders faced significant challenges at the crash site, with the Kenya Red Cross reporting that recovery operations were being hampered by difficult terrain and an active fire.

The agency said an additional response team had been deployed from Isiolo to support the search and recovery operation.

The aircraft, identified as a Eurocopter EC130 B4, had departed from the Loisaba wildlife conservancy and was travelling towards the Ewaso Ngiro River when it crashed, aviation authorities said.

The helicopter was carrying guests associated with luxury safari operator &Beyond, according to Lady Lori Helicopters, the company operating the aircraft.

Lady Lori Helicopters said the cause of the crash remained unknown.

Kenya’s Ministry of Transport has commenced an investigation into the incident as authorities continue efforts to recover the victims and establish what caused the helicopter to crash.

The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of aviation safety as investigators begin examining the aircraft, flight conditions and circumstances surrounding the fatal journey.
