A 200-level Political Science student of Rev. Fr. Moses Orshio Adasu University (MOAUM), Rose Adikwu, has been hospitalised in Makurdi after she was allegedly attacked with hot water during a dispute with her cousin and co-tenant.

Adikwu is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in the Benue State capital after reportedly sustaining severe burns in the incident, which occurred on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The alleged attacker, identified as Agbo Felicia, a 500-level Chemistry student, was subsequently arrested by the police.

Adikwu recounted the incident when the Students’ Union President, Akighirga Vitalis, and other union executives visited her at the hospital.

According to her, she and Felicia had been living together but had been involved in a prolonged disagreement over personal issues. She said the situation eventually deteriorated to the point that she asked Felicia to move out of the apartment.

Adikwu alleged that after Felicia packed her belongings, she went to a neighbour’s room, boiled water and mixed it with pepper, salt, onions and seasoning before returning to their apartment.

She claimed Felicia then poured the hot mixture on her, locked the door and left her inside as she cried for help.

Adikwu said neighbours heard her cries and came to her rescue. Felicia was reportedly intercepted while attempting to leave the area, after which the police were contacted and she was arrested.

Reacting to the incident, Students’ Union President Akighirga Vitalis described the alleged attack as a serious and unacceptable act against another student.

Vitalis assured Adikwu and her family that the Students’ Union would closely monitor the case, engage the appropriate authorities and follow both the police investigation and any disciplinary proceedings initiated by the university.

He added that if the allegations were established through due process, the union would support appropriate disciplinary measures in accordance with the university’s regulations, including expulsion if warranted.

Vitalis stressed that the Students’ Union would not tolerate violence or conduct capable of putting another student’s life at risk.

He also advised students dealing with disputes involving roommates, relatives or colleagues to seek peaceful intervention from university authorities, Students’ Union officials or law enforcement agencies rather than resorting to violence.

The union president was accompanied by other Students’ Union executives during the hospital visit.

In a statement signed by Mark Tyodoo, Press Secretary to the Students’ Union President, the union reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare and safety of students.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Benue State Command, DSP Peter Aondongu, confirmed both the incident and the arrest of the suspect.

Aondongu said preliminary information indicated that the two students had been staying together before a disagreement arose between them.

According to the police spokesman, the suspect allegedly boiled water, added salt and pepper, poured the mixture on the victim and locked her inside the room.

He said people later discovered what had happened, rescued Adikwu and took her to the hospital for treatment, while the suspect was arrested.

Aondongu said the police had yet to establish the exact cause of the disagreement but confirmed that the incident occurred on Friday, August 28, 2026.

He also stated that both women were understood to be students of Benue State University.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
