A Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) officer, identified as Joseph Ali, has reportedly died after a locally fabricated rifle he was handling accidentally discharged and struck him in the left eye in Abuja.
The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. in Compensation Layout, Old Kutunku, Abuja, while Ali was preparing to leave his residence for work.
According to a police signal obtained by SaharaReporters, a distress call was received from the area following the accidental discharge involving the immigration officer.
The signal said Ali had dressed and was preparing to report for duty when he picked up the locally fabricated rifle, which he reportedly used to secure the community, intending to conceal it before leaving for work.
However, he was allegedly unaware that the firearm was cocked.
“In the process of picking it, the rifle discharged, with the pellets hitting him on the left eye,” the signal stated.
The incident reportedly occurred in the presence of Ali’s wife and children.
He was immediately rushed to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital (UATH), where a doctor on duty examined him and reportedly confirmed that he had died.
“Victim is taken to UATH where the doctor on duty confirmed him dead,” the signal stated.
His remains were subsequently deposited at the mortuary of the hospital pending an autopsy.
The case has been referred to the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCB) for further investigation, according to the report.
The authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
