On Thursday, August 13, 2026, a significant section of the UNICEM Clinic in Calabar, Cross River State, collapsed entirely.
This structural failure followed a devastating landslide triggered by persistent, torrential rain. The clinic is located near Anansa Road and the Marina area in the state capital.
Fortunately, medical staff and occupants were successfully evacuated prior to the final collapse, resulting in zero reported casualties.
Severe soil erosion and a destabilized hillside following weeks of heavy rain caused the ground beneath the multi-storey structure to wash away completely.
The Cross River State Commissioner for Information, Ekpenyong Cobham, classified the collapse as part of a broader “serious natural disaster” affecting multiple buildings.
The state government is coordinating efforts with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assist displaced residents and assess the ongoing threat to nearby structures.
