Nigeria’s Super Falcons produced an emphatic attacking display to defeat Egypt 6-2 on Wednesday and secure a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after surviving a tense Group C finale.

The 10-time African champions, who began the tournament with a defeat to Malawi before beating Zambia, needed victory to keep their knockout-stage hopes alive. Their progress also depended on the outcome of the other Group C fixture between Malawi and Zambia.

Nigeria finished with six points and advanced after the Confederation of African Football’s tie-break criteria separated the three teams that ended level on points.

The Super Falcons took the lead in the 21st minute when Asisat Oshoala calmly converted a penalty awarded after a VAR review for handball.

Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage in first-half stoppage time, finishing decisively after coming off the bench.

Egypt pulled one back moments before the interval through Nadine Ghazi, who converted a penalty following another VAR review to leave Nigeria leading 2-1 at half-time.

Nigeria regained control after the break, with substitute Uchenna Kanu scoring in the 57th minute after capitalising on a defensive error.

The Super Falcons were awarded another penalty after a VAR review, and Christy Ucheibe converted from the spot in the 81st minute to make it 4-1.

Ghazi struck again three minutes later to reduce the deficit to 4-2, but Egypt’s hopes of a comeback were short-lived.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade converted Nigeria’s fourth penalty of the match in the 91st minute before setting up substitute Joy Omewa, who completed the scoring in stoppage time to seal a commanding 6-2 victory.

While Nigeria took care of business against Egypt, events in the other Group C match ensured qualification remained uncertain until the closing stages.

Zambia defeated Malawi 2-1, leaving the three sides level on six points and forcing CAF’s tie-break rules to determine the final standings.

Nigeria’s convincing victory, combined with the tie-break calculations, secured the Super Falcons a place in the last eight after recovering from their opening defeat of the tournament.

The match also produced several disciplinary incidents. Egypt’s Essam H., Menna Tarek and Nour Abdelwahed were booked, while Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu received yellow cards. Egypt coach Mohamed Kamal was also cautioned late in the contest.

The Super Falcons will now face the winners of Group D in the quarter-finals as they continue their bid for an 11th WAFCON title.
