The contractor in charge of a three-storey building under construction in Umuozue, Osisioma Ngwa Local Government Area of Abia State, has reportedly gone into hiding after the structure collapsed early Thursday morning.

The building, located at No. 7 Chima Otuka Street, reportedly came down at about 3 a.m., roughly eight hours after construction workers had left the site the previous evening.

The collapse also damaged a vehicle and other property belonging to a tenant in a neighbouring building.

The exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined by the relevant government authorities. However, some residents of the Umuozue community said workers had completed parapet work on the building on Wednesday evening, just hours before it collapsed.

Following the incident, officials from the Osisioma Ngwa Town Planning Office sealed off the property to allow for a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse.
